Review of our trip to Isla Mujeres

We loved Isla Mujeres. It was a great introduction to Mexico. The Mexican people are genuinely friendly and eager to please. Our resort was 1st class, good food and our suite was unreal! Read our trip advisor review here.

The island is beautiful, quiet, the Centro is fun and everywhere you feel safe and welcome. We spent 8 full days and did not get bored one second. A week is certainly not too much although you could get the flavor in 3-4 days. One day visit is clearly not enough.

We highly recommend the island! Thanks to Terry and Lucie Fay for recommending it to us.

3/10/2014 Homeward Bound but still last morning!

The final morning began with breakfast outside at Sabor at our usual table.  We have enjoyed the breakfast buffett each day and there is plenty to eat in great variety.  We did not have to get the ferry until 1pm so we had lots of time to lounge on our pool terrace, order lunch and even have Margaritas.

Odie has declared herself Queen of the Margaritas specializing frozen Margaritas on this trip.  I think we both give Isla 2 thumbs up. We will miss this apartment but will always have the amazing memories of our great 25th anniversary trip!

3/9/2014 Sunday Our Last Full Day

Isla Mujeres is an amazing place. We certainly loved our visit. We spent our last full day after our traditional breakfast at our regular table at the the Sabor terrace. It is a most pleasurable experience to sit in the warm sunshine talking and listening to to the birds. After our traditional breakfast we had our now traditional walk through the colors sights and sounds of the Centro.

We went through the centre to City Hall and stopped on the way back for a beer and margarita by the beach. We wanted to maximize the beach time for this our last full day and proceeded there after we refreshed in the room. We did not have a bed today but our location at number 6 chairs were great.  There is no bad location on the beach for sure.  We continued to enjoy frozen Margaritas and Victoria beer for the duration of the afternoon. It truly is a relaxing paradise.

For supper we went to the Sabor outdoor restaurant for our last supper where we slipped a little food to the hungry cat by our table.

We had a special waiter every night at Sabor. We will remember Ponce, his special attention and end of meal shots!

After supper we strolled through the night time Centro and enjoyed some last night drinks at the corner of the Argentina Restaurant. What a wonderful vacation it has been.

3/8/2014 Saturday

Saturday we were right in the swing of breakfast by the beach, walk down centro, relax at our own pool and then to the beach. This day we again had the luxury of a huge beachside beg. It is super comfortable and what a treat to have the very friendly wait staff bringing you beer, frozen Margaritas and edible food! We had guacamole on the beach each time I believe, so fresh.   Terry did find a great white beach shirt from one of the friendly and non pushy beach vendors.

After pre drinks at the room we went for the buffet down below. It was delicious Mexican night. Odette had so many a la minute tacos she lost count. In addition to our chosen drinks the waiter served us with tequia shooters!

That night we walked along Centro, watched the people and had drinks at the Koko Nuts, they served good beer and drinks and Odie thought the guy was cute. He looked like pee wee herman.

The sun is back

Say what you want, lounging on the beach is great! We started our day with our daily morning walk. Today we walked on Playa Norte by the other hotel resort. We concluded that our resort and side of the beach was better, wider and with more interesting locals. We stopped for a drink at Jax for some people watching.

Everyday, we ended the morning by a little R&R on our terrace and a few dips in our pool. We will miss that terrace! This is the best accommodation we have ever experienced.

We hit the beach for lunch and an afternoon in the super comfy luxiourious beach bed. Can't get better than that! Did I mentioned that my new favorite drink is a good frozen Margarita! It is the perfect combination of pure clean booze and salty limie deliciousness. Oh my!

We had a super friendly dinner experience at Lola Lorena's. This was a dining experience in her garden with 6 other travellers, all from the USA. Very nice meal in great company!

Cruising the island and lunch in the rain

Yes! it rains in Mexico! We had a beautiful breakfast in the sunshine this morning, rented a golf cart again to cruise the island but were soaked in the torrential tunder and lighting storm just after stopping for lunch at Oscar's. This was total serendipity as we stayed dry soaking the almighty margaritas and Sol beers while the rain fell.

Before all of that booze we stopped at Richard Sowa'a floating bottle island. What an experience to visit the character's Eco-oasis! His island is made of plastic bottles. Quite the experience to say the least!

We ended our day for dinner at Satay for some truly delicious food again and a great walk through the Centro!

Walked the wall

We walked the west coast wall, saw a few yogis and iguanas again. Admired the volcanic rocks and wondered at the decrepit casas along side the new developments. Swang around the naval base.

Stopped for a beer at the bar on the main strip before hitting the beach for more sunshine and warmed. Miguel our excellent server who works six days a week catered to us with bottomless Margaritas and Sol Beers. We are loving this!!

We then went upstairs to our daily dip in our pool and a little kissi kissi tango.

We ended the evening at cafe del mar. There was a two men band that was pretty good!

Terry's Mardi Gras birthday

We started the day with a lovely walk along the sea wall with stunning views and warm breeze after visiting the cemetery.

We had a beer and margarita at Jax's at 11am to kick off Terry's birthday watching the Mardi Gras dancers. What a perfect day for Terry's 56 th birthday.

We lounged on the beach and can't believe all the drinks I had without a single tinge of headache!! Gorgeous day people watching which ended with pizza dinner and more Mardi Gras celebration and street performances.

Cruising Isla in Golf cart

We rented a golf cart on our 3rd day, Monday. We had a blast cruising around the small island. Golf carting is the best way to get around Isla.

We drove to Punta Sur and walked all the way down and around the Mayan temple ruins. There is not much left of the temple but the views are truly magnificent. There are interesting sculptures leading up to the Punta and iguanas everywhere! The wrap around path down the Punta is stunning. We loved Punta Sur! We enjoyed a cerveza at the Punta Sur bar soaking in the beauty of the most easterly point of Mexico or as Terry called it, Mexico's Cape Spear!

We had lunch where Terry and Lucie stayed at Baia Tortuga. I should say we had lunch with the Iguanas, they were everywhere looking for some of our lunch! I had Fijitas which were truly delicious.

We gave a ride to two cute little Mexican on the way.

We ended our golf cart tour following the Carnival loud and colorful procession.

We enjoyed a dip in our own pool and some relaxing time on our terrace before dinner at the hotel buffet which was not bad at all. Lots to choose from the Oriental Theme night buffer with a la minute stir fry, Pickin Duck and lots of seafood options.

We went to listen to the beach band sipping on a PiƱa Colada to end our wonderful day.

2nd day in Isla Mujeres - It's Carnaval!

We woke up to sunshine and warmth. Yay! Especially that it snowed in Vancouver today!

We had buffet breakfast, spend time on our stunning terrace and hit the beach for lunch and the afternoon.

It was a very noisy, lively afternoon with street dances and LOUD Mexican music. It's Carnaval!! We had a walk thru the street and it was very fun to see all the commotion.

We had dinner at Satay, the more upscale restaurant on the resort. Delicious Thai Asian food! Beautifully presented and tasty. The service was impeccable. We are very happy to have at least a very good food option for this all inclusive.

Arrival in Isla Mujeres

Our flight Vancouver Cancun was uneventful. A mere 5 hour flight, 20 min ferry across and a 5 min cab ride to our hotel, Peivilege Aluxes.

We have the two floor penthouse Platinum suite. It is huge, much bigger than our condo, with stunning views of sunrise and sunset. We have our own terrace and pool & a second bathroom. Wow! How lucky is that!!

We had dinner at Cafe del Mar on the beach. The food was ok. So far so good!

Unfortunately Odie has a big cold and had to sleep on the coach. Lucky that I could close the door and not disturb Terry with my non-stop cough.
